The week continues with key developments following peace talks in Istanbul. Russia had said it was ready to begin a major prisoner exchange with Ukraine on June 7–9, involving about 1,200 people per side. Ukraine expected the first group of 500 POWs to be returned over the weekend. The exchange is set to proceed in stages as coordination between the sides continues. However, in recent days, the Russians have accused the Ukrainians of disrupting the process, casting doubt on the prospects for a successful transfer.

Meanwhile, the EU is expected to decide whether to add Russia to its anti-money laundering grey list (a move delayed this week for procedural reasons). The listing would increase scrutiny on Russian transactions and signal stronger financial pressure. While the EU list usually follows FATF guidance, some lawmakers urge Brussels to go beyond it and assess real-world enforcement. The EU is also preparing its 18th sanctions package against Russia, aiming to expand penalties on banks, energy exports, and war-supporting entities.

On Monday, London will host the first Trump-Xi summit of Donald Trump’s second term. The meeting will focus on trade, Indo-Pacific security, and critical minerals however it is likely to be a key meeting for Ukraine. Trump has avoided criticism of Xi for supporting Russia during its invasion of Ukraine unlike other G7 members. But with Putin’s war machine increasingly dependent on China, this outcome of conversation will likely be very important for Ukraine’s future.

As for the U.S., all eyes are on whether the Senate will advance a major bipartisan Russia sanctions bill after Donald Trump requested a delay in the vote. The bill proposes a 500% tariff on imports from countries still buying Russian oil and raw materials, aiming to increase pressure on Moscow and deter indirect support. With 82 senators and House Speaker Mike Johnson backing it, the vote was expected this week, but now faces uncertainty as Trump cites hopes for a possible peace deal. Recent reports suggest that Trump has in private pressed the Senate to water down the legislation.

In related U.S. news, Donald Trump will celebrate his 79th birthday on June 14, coinciding with Flag Day and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. A massive military parade featuring 6,600 soldiers, vehicles, flyovers, and fireworks is planned in Washington, with Trump expected to attend key moments including an enlistment ceremony. Nationwide protests are also planned that day, with organizers calling it a “day of defiance.”

At the end of next week, the G7 Summit will start in Kananaskis, Canada (June 15–17). Ukraine and Canada have agreed on a joint action plan and Ukraine’s key priorities for the summit. This will be the first G7 meeting for Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and for U.S. President Donald Trump following his return to office. The discussions will focus on support for Ukraine, strengthening bilateral relations, and global issues such as economic stability and climate change.

Ukraine has confirmed its invitation to the NATO summit in The Hague on June 24–25, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Consultations are ongoing about Ukraine’s participation after his recent meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Netherlands has welcomed Zelensky’s attendance, following earlier speculation that Ukraine might be excluded.

A new member of Parliament is expected to take office soon following the resignation of Iryna Kolisnyk. A member of the Sluha Narody party, Kolisnyk stepped down after being formally charged with submitting false information in her financial declaration. The next candidate in the party's list likely to enter Parliament is Roman Kravets, administrator of the well-known Telegram channel “Joker,” which is reportedly linked to the President’s Office.
